Health Secretary Thérèse Coffey could soon hold the record for the shortest Health Secretary in history.

In as many months, the NHS is now on track for its fourth Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.

It comes following the resignation of Prime Minister Liz Truss yesterday and a Conservative Party leadership election which will take place in the coming days.

The new PM will likely appoint a whole new cabinet in the hours after their appointment.

Deputy Prime Minister and current Health Secretary Thérèse Coffey could soon hold the record for the shortest Health Secretary in history, followed by Steve Barclay. The latter held the position for just 63 days over the summer.

Dr Coffey has continually upset nursing staff since her appointment by omitting them totally from important announcements and only last week suggesting they leave the UK “if they want to”. She has also rejected any notion of a further pay rise for NHS workers at every opportunity.

This government collapsed.

Nursing staff are currently voting on if to strike over deteriorating pay and conditions.

Speaking yesterday about the resignation of Liz Truss, Royal College of Nursing General Secretary and Chief Executive, Pat Cullen, said: “This government collapsed because it pursued a narrow agenda for the rich — giving most to those who have the most.

“Working people — our half a million nursing staff chief amongst them — deserve better than that raw deal.

“A reshuffling of faces, if not met by a radical shift in outlook, will not inspire confidence. In the eyes of our members, perhaps only a fresh election can move the country forward.

“We are halfway through our historic ballot. Nursing staff are voting yes to striking but also yes to a much bigger call for fairness and justice. A new prime minister and government — of any party — must be ready for that result in November.”
